LIVING IN LIGHT – THE PHOTOGRAPHIC LIFE OF JOHN STREET
The photographer paints with light – and throughout his long career multi-award-winning John Street has always done that with the finesse of a master painter.
In Swinging 60s London, Street worked in fashion, food and product photography, gaining an international reputation in the advertising world.
Arriving in Australia in 1972, he revolutionised food photography, working alongside talented designers such as Sue Tilley and creating unforgettable images.
After leaving the advertising world behind, Street turned to the largest of large-format photography. Using a 20 x 24-inch grand format camera and Ilfochrome media, he began producing images of great art and beauty created with natural objects, fruit, flowers, even feathers, and light. The images he created are true originals with no intermediate negative or transparency – yet these are still photographs “light paintings” by definition.
“Growing up” he says, “the light I loved was the soft Northern light of Europe. The crystal-clear light of Australia brought me alive with its vivacity”.
In his most recent work he is incorporating his love and study of Eastern thought, art and philosophy with calligraphic and origami-style artworks, using his photographic elements in a fresh new way.
Never resting on his considerable laurels John Street continues, in his late 80s, to push the bounds of photography as far as he can. Always searching for the next form of expression, he continues to surprise and delight and create wonderful art. Like the master himself, we’re left wondering “what will come next?”
