MAGNET GALLERIES MELBOURNE, the not-for-profit centre of photography, hosts the prestigious World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 in Melbourne’s Docklands in June.

In its 67-year history, this is the first time the exhibition has come to Melbourne.

This annual blockbuster showcases the best in photojournalism and reaches a global audience of over four million people each year.

Now, Victorian audiences get to view the best and most important photojournalism and documentary photography from around the world. Winners include 24 photographers from 23 countries.

The winners and honorable mentions were chosen from 4,066 entrants from 130 different countries.

Australian winner

The winner of the category World Press Photo Story is one of Australia’s photojournalist photographers, Matthew Abbott. His winning series ‘Saving Forests with Fire’, was photographed in Arnhem Land in 2021.  It documents the aboriginal practice of “cool burning” the land strategically to prevent destructive hot-burning bushfires.

WPP provides diverse perspectives, courageous stories, and invaluable insights into everything from the climate crisis to civil rights movements, and indigenous practices and identity.

See World Press Photo 2022 at MAGNET from 10 – 30 June 2022.
